With more than five million inhabitants, the Ruhr area is the largest metropolitan region in Germany. In addition to the diversity of its people and wide range of cultural offerings, the region is home to many medium-sized and large companies as well as research and educational institutions.
Situated on an area of 4,435 km2, 37 of Germany’s 500 largest companies are headquartered in this region, including the Aldi Group, E.ON, Evonik, RWE, SIGNAL IDUNA and thyssenkrupp.
With the Port of Duisburg, the Ruhr area is home to Europe’s largest inland port. The central distribution centers of IKEA, Amazon and Decathlon are located in the Ruhr area as well, all of which highlights the region’s important strategic position in Europe.
With a total of 400 degree programs and almost 300,000 students at 22 universities, the Ruhr region has the highest science and research density in Europe.
Whether looking for small town flair or the bustle of the city, the Ruhr area offers both – with river or canal banks always in close proximity, stretching over 572 kilometers. A further 1,200 kilometers of bike paths are every cyclist’s dream.
The region hosts about 90 trade fairs annually, covering a wide variety of topics. Numerous nationally and internationally distinguished conferences with speakers from the businesses world, the science sector and from politics promote the exchange of information.
